MArch 14 – International Day of Action

Perth, Western Australia – 9th March 2012 – Occupy Perth, together with community activists, refugee rights activists, unionists, Aboriginal deaths in custody activists, will today hold a protest action outside Serco’s head office in Perth – 225 St Georges Terrace at 12pm.

Occupy London, Occupy Sydney, Occupy Melbourne will be also holding similar actions in their respective parts of the world protesting this massive multinational corporation that profits off public/essential services and human misery.

Serco is a multi-billion dollar private corporation, dubbed by the UK’s Guardian newspaper as “the biggest company you’ve never heard of”.  They have built an empire on running the services we interact with everyday.

Occupy Perth spokesperson Alex Bainbridge says “the kind of essential services which Serco run have been previously done so by Government and therefore with relative transparency.    It’s bad enough that essential public utilities like telecommunications, water, etc. are privatised to our detriment, now we have a private corporation with a clear profit-motive running sensitive human services like refugee detention centres and prisons?  It’s like something out of a science-fiction movie!”

Victoria Martin-Iversen of the Refugee Rights Action Network of Western Australia says “In the Serco-run Leonora detention center, where they hold males from 14 – 17 years of age they allow subcontracted security officers without working with children checks to interact with the detainees and refer to the children by number rather than name. These children are not given any access to schooling, and most have not even seen the town of Leonora.”

“Occupy Perth and the larger Occupy movement has chosen to target Serco because they represent a clear and particularly insidious example of a corporation, a privately-run tyranny controlled by the 1%, operating to serve their own profit-making interests ahead of those of the 99%.”
